Following its successful foray into the world of French operetta last year with Offenbach’s La Belle Hélène, Bath G&S returns to home ground with three concert performances of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Utopia Ltd.
Opening at the Savoy in 1893, this was the last but one of the duo’s collaborations and although less well known Sullivan still delivers some great melodies and Gilbert’s libretto packs a considerable satirical punch.
Utopia’s ruler, King Paramount, decides to introduce English customs, laws and institutions to his tiny south sea island. However, he upsets the populace when he goes a bit overboard and decrees that the kingdom and each of its inhabitants become a limited company. A full-scale revolt is avoided when the King’s daughter Princess Zara realises that one key element is missing in the new regime – government by party!
