WildThyme's Festival of Music

03 / 2011

Following the Literature Festival in the first weekend of March and the Mid-Somerset Festival here 9 – 11 March, the last weekend of March Friday 11th - Sunday 13th brought a fabulous selection of concerts arranged by local promoters: Bob and Sue Bunyar of WildThymeMusic. Mixing folk, jazz and old-time classics, Bob and Sue provided three excellent evenings of entertainment here at The Mission.

The Acoustic Strawbs had played to a sell-out audience here in February 2010 and WildThyme asked them to return this year by popular demand. Dave Cousins was a founding member of the popular 60s band The Strawbs and this outstanding guitarist and vocalist has been joined by Chas Cronk on bass and Dave Lambert on guitar. Last Friday night The Mission was once again full to the hilt as the audience were treated to a mix of the original “prog-folk” hits such as Grave New World, Lay Down and Part of the Union as well as some of their newer acoustic tracks.

Local singer and musician Lindy Platt then pulled together a whole range of the best of Bath’s music scene to create Loose Change on Saturday night. The concert was fundraising for Lindy’s project in Malawi: Thought for Food, which exists to provide eight villages with the materials and facilities they need to grow and sustain their own food produce. The concert was a roaring success, with local groups and singers giving their time and talents free of charge to a very lively and appreciative audience. As a result of this concert over £600 was raised for Thought For Food.

Finally on Sunday night we were delighted to welcome back 60s legend Julie Felix. The American folk singer and guitarist has performed twice previously at The Mission, commenting that the building has special vibes for her. Certainly everyone in the audience on Sunday was awed by Julie’s incredible vocal talent and the atmosphere she created in the main auditorium was electric. The concert was one of her best yet, and she finally performed Goin’ To The Zoo after three years of requests from Bob!

WildThymeMusic always present the very best of folk and acoustic music, so be sure not to miss their next three events: Sonny Black performing in The Theatre Upstairs on Sunday 27th March, Keith Potger of The Seekers on Wednesday 30th March and a special concert from Sue Bunyar and Lindy Platt on Sunday 17th April: Two in a Bar, performed upstairs here at The Mission. We hope to see you there.
