Severn Jazzmen raise the roof

06 / 2011

The Mission Theatre was bursting with vibrant jazz on Thursday 9 June when the Severn Jazzmen performed here for the first time in the main auditorium. With the theatre laid out in an intimate cabaret-style setting, the audience were treated to a glorious melee of jazz styles from Dixieland to Trad Jazz. Each member of the seven-strong band specialises in an instrument (or two) - trombone, guitar/banjo, cornet/flugle horn, clarinet/saxophone, piano, drums and double bass - and they all had their chance to display their talents in solo sections and numbers.

Pieces ranged from the popular classics such as "Stranger on the Shore" and Gershwin's "S'Wonderful" to the haunting "Midnight in Moscow" and a rousing finish with the "Panama Rag". The audience clearly had a lovely evening, putting in requests with the band over the interval and many staying to congratulate them at the end.

We very much hope to host the Jazzmen again in the future, and thank them for a delightful evening's entertainment.
