One of the added pleasures of living in a city like Bath is the number of unexpected and interesting places in which it is possible to get very good things to eat.
Good non meat food is offered in the upstairs bistro at the Mission Theatre on Corn Street both when the theatre is not being used for entertainment – and also when it is.
The Green Room is fully vegetarian and is open through the morning and at lunchtimes on most weekdays.
It also occasionally offers something which is pretty much unique in Bath which is the theatre supper.
This is exactly what it says it is. A bit of good theatre either side of some of the tastiest food you are likely to find in Bath.
Last week the Mission based company Next Stage offered a slice of Terence Rattigan's much loved Separate Tables called Table by the Window with actors Kay Francksen, Jane Lawson and Tim Evans.
The play was a delicious accompaniment to the food and was the sort of faultless production we have come to expect from this company.
The theatre only does one theatre supper per season and to whet your appetite I can tell you that the company is performing The Gin Game from October 15.
Our own table fairly near a window last week was attractively set out with fresh flowers and nibbles as we waited for either courgette and asparagus pasta salad or goats' cheese mushroom, spinach and rice pie both served with new potatoes and a selection of Bistro salads. I have had those before at lunchtime and they are delicious.
Pudding came in the form of either strawberry cheesecake or lime pannacotta with fruit skewer and passion fruit sauce. I was sorry for anyone who hadn't ordered the cheesecake.
If you are tempted to try the bistro during the day it is open Tuesday to Fridays from 10.30am to 2.30pm.
The Green Room offers a constantly changing vegetarian, vegan and gluten free menu which is prepared daily on the premises. Vitally important it is fully licensed and serves very good glasses of wine or a bottle if you prefer. The menu is updated twice weekly on www.missiontheatre.co.uk/bistro.html.
If you get there in the morning you can have coffee and cake and if you are sensible drift into lunch which might be pea and courgette soup served with crusty bread at £4.50 or roasted aubergine, goats' cheese and walnut salad at £6.
The Green Room offers a full takeaway service on all hot meals, quiches, soups, salads, filled rolls and cakes. You can wait while staff prepare your meal or you can use the call-and-collect service to place an order in advance and arrange a time to pick up your food.
