Children's Literature Festival 2009

Children's Literature Festival 2009 - week 2

09 / 2009

The second weekend of The Third Daily Telegraph Bath Festival of Children’s Literature at the Mission Theatre was as busy as the first one, with excited children, and parents, having the chance to meet more of their favourite characters.

The weekend kicked off on Saturday with Top Gear –at times it seemed as though the Scalextric tracks were as popular with the Dads as the kids! Topsy and Tim celebrated their 50th Birthday with a sold-out event later that morning. The traditional fairy tale of The Gingerbread Man delighted young listeners following which the creators of Chimp and Zee gave a lively talk with illustrations. One of the high spots of the day was The Peter Rabbit Puppet Show in which a larger than life Peter Rabbit was extremely naughty, whilst entertaining all the children with a puppet show involving his escapades and many other favourite Beatrix Potter creations. The author Laurence Anholt and illustrator Arthur Robins completed the day with their presentation of Seriously Silly Stories.

On Sunday, an event for which the Mission is ideal, Baby Bookworms, saw a number of young babes with parents enjoying an early introduction to the pleasures of storytelling and reading. Maisy Mouse was the popular lunchtime draw with another sell-out show, and then the ever popular Flower Fairies Forever attracted a large audience of mainly little girls in beautiful costumes enjoying the show and making their own fairy wings. In total contrast, Sunday ended not with fairies but with the Heroes and Villains popular authors leading a lively debate with their young audience as to who should achieve global domination: Goodies or Baddies!

All in all, The Third Daily Telegraph Bath Festival of Children’s Literature was a huge success with many people saying that they cannot wait for next year’s event.
