Singers on Sunday

10 / 2009

Peter Blackwood's "Singers on Sunday" always provide a delightful evening's entertainment and this Sunday's concert in The Theatre Upstairs was no exception. Over the course of the year they have provided a whole range of music, from classical operatic arias through to twentieth century pieces. Three highly talented singers - Rachel Pitt (soprano), Erica Ricci (mezzo-soprano) and John Taylor (baritone) - started the evening with the "On This Island" suite by Benjamin Britten, two arias set by Frescobaldi, and "Venga Pur" by Mozart. After the break, they moved forward in time to cover Schubert, Vaughan Williams, Thomas Dunhill and Charles Stanford, among others, before concluding with "Love's Old Sweet Song" by James Malloy, a sentimental ballad used by James Joyce in Ulysses.

As always, the singing was of extremely high quality and the audience enjoyed listening to music in the intimate setting - an excellent way to relax on a cold Autumn Sunday.
