The highly popular series "Sunday Specials", launched in September, concluded this month with a fascinating talk from local artist Brian Elwell. Brian's work ranges from landscapes to architectural paintings but he is currently embarked on a series of portraits of remarkable people drawn from all walks of life. Some of Brian's exceptional portraits were on show as he entertained his audience in the Theatre Upstairs with anecdotes, pictures, slides and film of the many famous people he has met.
Whether he was describing Patrick Moore in a kaftan, Archbishop Desmond Tutu exuberantly dancing with an African choir, John Simpson's cautious approval of his painting, or Andrew Marr politely declining the offer of a sitting, Brian's stories were entertaining and insightful. It was fascinating to hear how the works were accomplished from first meeting to final brushstroke and it was a privilege to see some of Brian's amazingly lifelike portraits at first hand. Brian's talk was a fitting conclusion to this first series of Sunday Specials, with a second series planned for later in 2009.
