Discover the truth behind the myth!
No man (or god) can resist Eurydice’s charms – except Orpheus, her husband. With the help of a snake in the grass, he thinks he’s rid of her for ever – until his mother intervenes. In fear of her and for his reputation, he embarks on a mission to rescue Eurydice from the clutches of Death - which she is finding isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Meanwhile, on Mount Olympus, the gods are revolting and in Hades, the party’s hotting up nicely. Who will win Eurydice’s hand – not to mention the rest of her – in the end?
Join the Bath G&S Society as we take a trip across the English Channel and present four concert performances of Offenbach’s most successful opera. Following the original run of Orpheus in the Underworld, Gilbert and Sullivan were inspired to write a series of home-grown British comic operas. Packed full of catchy tunes, Orpheus will forever be associated with the famous can-can which shocked even Paris. Don’t miss all the fun!
A concert performance of this Comic Operetta in three Acts from the original by HECTOR CREMIEUX and LUDOVIC HALEVY. New book and lyrics by PHIL PARK. Music by JACQUES OFFENBACH. Music adapted and arranged by RONALD HANMER. This amateur production by Bath Gilbert & Sullivan Society is presented by arrangement with Josef Weinberger Ltd.
