In a fit of unfounded jealousy, Leontes, King of Sicily, convinces himself that his pregnant wife, Hermione, is carrying his best friend’s love child. Leontes orders that the child - Perdita - should be abandoned in a desolate place and Hermione imprisoned and separated from their existing child, Mamillus. Following what appears to be the Queen’s and Mamillus’ tragic deaths, Leontes is grief-stricken. After a twenty-year time jump, the King’s now grown-up daughter, Perdita, arrives in Sicily. What she discovers about both herself and the past provides the means of resolving the devastation created by Leontes’ rage.
Audiences are invited to watch Shakespeare’s fantasy The Winter’s Tale come alive this January, as this universal tale of destruction, loss and redemption is brought to The Mission Theatre. Though perhaps his greatest play of the irrational and inexplicable, this updated re-imagining, now transported to 2018, is timeless, yet resonant: a jolting reminder of the apparent autocracy of those in power.
