by Oscar Wilde
Presented by Bath Spa Theatrical Society
Saturday 18th – Sunday 19th April, 7:30pm
Guaranteed fun and laughter in Bath Spa Theatrical Society’s production of The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. A witty comedy that satirises Victorian society’s emphasis on social conventions, marriage and identity.
The play follows two friends, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who both lead double lives under the name “Ernest” to escape societal obligations and pursue love. Jack uses the name in the city to woo Gwendolen Fairfax, while Algernon adopts it to court Cecily Cardew,
Jack’s ward.
Their deception unravels when both women insist they can only love men named Ernest, leading to confusion, mistaken identities, and humorous confrontations.
Wilde’s sharp dialogue and ironic tone expose the absurdities of class, respectability, and moral pretension, celebrating wit and authenticity over rigid social norms. The play remains a timeless masterpiece of satire and farce.
“I’ve now realised for the first time in my life the vital importance of being earnest”
